Genesis 11:1 The whole earth was of one language and of one speech.
Genesis 11:2 It happened, as they traveled east, that they found a plain in the land of Shin`ar, and they lived there.
Genesis 11:3 They said one to another, "Come, let's make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.
Genesis 11:4 They said, "Come, let's build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let's make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth."
Genesis 11:5 The LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.
Genesis 11:6 The LORD said, "Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do.
Genesis 11:7 Come, let's go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech."
Genesis 11:8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city.
Genesis 11:9 Therefore the name of it was called Bavel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. From there, the LORD scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.
Genesis 11:10 This is the history of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old and became the father of Arpakhshad two years after the flood.
Genesis 11:11 Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpakhshad, and became the father of sons and daughters.
Genesis 11:12 Arpakhshad lived thirty-five years and became the father of Shelach.
Genesis 11:13 Arpakhshad lived four hundred three years after he became the father of Shelach, and became the father of sons and daughters.
Genesis 11:14 Shelach lived thirty years, and became the father of `Ever:
Genesis 11:15 and Shelach lived four hundred three years after he became the father of `Ever, and became the father of sons and daughters.
Genesis 11:16 `Ever lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg.
Genesis 11:17 `Ever lived four hundred thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and became the father of sons and daughters.
Genesis 11:18 Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Re`u.
Genesis 11:19 Peleg lived two hundred nine years after he became the father of Re`u, and became the father of sons and daughters.
Genesis 11:20 Re`u lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug.
Genesis 11:21 Re`u lived two hundred seven years after he became the father of Serug, and became the father of sons and daughters.
Genesis 11:22 Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nachor.
Genesis 11:23 Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nachor, and became the father of sons and daughters.
Genesis 11:24 Nachor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terach.
Genesis 11:25 Nachor lived one hundred nineteen years after he became the father of Terach, and became the father of sons and daughters.
Genesis 11:26 Terach lived seventy years, and became the father of Avram, Nachor, and Charan.
Genesis 11:27 Now this is the history of the generations of Terach. Terach became the father of Avram, Nachor, and Charan. Charan became the father of Lot.
Genesis 11:28 Charan died before his father Terach in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Kasdim.
Genesis 11:29 Avram and Nachor took wives. The name of Avram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nachor's wife, Milkah, the daughter of Charan who was also the father of Yiskah.
Genesis 11:30 Sarai was barren. She had no child.
Genesis 11:31 Terach took Avram his son, Lot the son of Charan, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Avram's wife. They went forth from Ur of the Kasdim, to go into the land of Kena`an. They came to Charan and lived there.
Genesis 11:32 The days of Terach were two hundred five years. Terach died in Charan.
